Top 10 Most Popular Korean Kpop Boy Groups In 2014

Kpop is a contemporary music genre specific to South Korea that is inspired by American music genres like techno, rap and R&B. Even if pop groups are not in trend anymore in the Western world, Kpop groups are very popular now in Asia. Different groups of boys and girls have managed to become popular in the last decade. In 2014, there are many boy bands that are embracing the Kpop culture. In this music industry, groups are always in a competition in which they try to beat the performances of any other groups like them. 10. 2PM (Beastly Idols)


2PM (Beastly Idols)

This group comes from Seoul, the capital of South Korea. In the past, these boys were part of a larger group (eleven members) called One Day. This larger group has split in two smaller groups, one being called 2AM and the other one 2PM. The current members of the group are: Chansung, Wooyoung, Junho, Taecyeon and Jun.K. A guy by the name of Jay Park was the leader of the group, but he left the band at the start of the year 2012. Different music genres are approached besides Kpop: dance, pop, hip hop and R&B.

9. Beast (B2ST)


Beast (B2ST)

This South Korean group is made of six members: Yang Yo-seob, Son Dong-woon, Yoon Doo-joon, Lee Gi-kwang, Yong Jun-hyung and Jang Hyun-seung. Their first single was called “Beast in the B2ST” and was released in 2009. Many awards were given to this group, such as Melon Music Awards or Seoul Music Awards.

8. Tong Fang Xien Qi (DBSK)

Shortly TVXQ, this boy group is the oldest, as it was established in 2003, by S.M. Entertainment. They sing only Kpop, R&B and dance and there are five members: Micky Yoochun, Xiah Junsu, Hero Jaejoong, U-Know Yunho and Max Changmin. The popularity of the group exploded after releasing their first single called “Hug” in 2004.

7. Super Junior

Super Junior was founded in 2005 and initially had twelve boys. Today, the number of members is thirteen. These members are: Siwona, Leeteuk, Donghae, Sungmin, Ryeowook, Kibum, Yesung, Shindong, Hankyung, Kyuyun, Eunhyuk and Heechel. The most popular song of this group is the one known as the “Korean Wave”. In 2009, they released the song that brought them the popularity that they now have: “Sorry Sorry”.

6. Shinee

Established in 2008 by S.M. Entertainment, Shinee uses genres of music like electronic, dance, pop and R&B. The following boys are part of this group: Taemin, Min ho, Key, New and Jonghyun. They started their career with a single called “Replay” in 2008 and received many nominations later. This group has created a fashion style called the “Shinee Trend”, as they also appeared in reality shows.

5. CNBLUE


CNBLUE

The name of the group represents Code Blue (CN), followed by BLUE, the initials of the images of each group member combined. Formed in Seoul in 2009, the group has the following members: Kong, Min-yuk (drums and vocals), Lee-hyun (guitar and vocals), Lee Jung-Shun (bass guitar and vocals) and Jung Yong-haw (lead vocals and rhythm guitar). Pop, rock and Kpop are the approached genres. They had a first mini album in 2009 called “Now or never”.

4. MBLAQ

These initials come from Music Boys Live in Absolute Quality. The group was founded by a popular entertainer from South Korea, known as “Rain”. The four members of this band are: Seungho, Cheondung, G.O. and Lee Joon. The debut was made in 2009 with the single called “just BLAQ”. It reached top places in offline and online charts.

3. Big Bang


Big Bang

The Big Bang group has three main characteristics: style, flashy fashion and urban music style. Started in 2006, Big Bang has five members: T.O.P, Seungri, G-Dragon, Taeyang and Daesung. The manager of this band is YG Entertainment. The group stands out from the rest because these boys completely make their own music. They have known fame since they released their debut single, “Lies”. Different awards have been won over time.

2. Infinite

Infinite

Infinite is one of the most popular boy bands in South Korea. Seven members are in the group: Kim Sunggyu (primary vocalist and leader), Lee Howon (dancer and primary rapper), Nam Woohyun (primary vocalist), Jang Dongwoo (dancer and lead rapper), Kim Myungsoo (vocalist) and Lee Sungyeol (rapper and vocalist). The first album of the band was called “Come Back Again” and came out in 2010.

1. EXO


EXO

EXO is number one of the top 10 most popular Korean Kpop boy groups in 2014 and has something special: it is a Chinese-South Korean boy group. Even if it is relatively new (formed in 2012 by S.M. Entertainment), the band is seen as the most successful Kpop group in South Korea. There are twelve members, in two subgroups: EXO-K and EXO-M. The single called “Mama” reached the top ten of the most viewed videos on YouTube and the Chinese music charts.
